It's All Relative
I am blessed to have wonderful, intersting clients...well, mostly.
This week, I was reminded again how everything truly is relative.
A client came in and told me about her week-she had come back from a trip to visit family and also recently had cataract surgery. She relayed how she was really getting tired of people telling her all of the time how wonderful she looks and, if/when they realize her age, they remark that they really just don't know how she "does it". I was a bit confused, because when people tell me I look good, especially for my "age", I am usually pleased and flattered. (Yes, my ego is doing very well, thank you!) Her annoyance lay in the fact that people are basically exclaiming, without saying so, that she is so old and they just can't believe how well she's faring-especially considering her ancient age! This became pretty clear to me when she repeated three times, with greater emphasis each time, that she is, after all, only 85 and they are acting as if she's 100!
Here's hoping that in 40 short years, when I reach the age of 85, that there are plenty of people annoying me with their equally crazy comments~May it be so.
